What is Bija Akshara?

The term bija translates as seed. Just like a tiny seed holds within itself the potential to become a full fledged tree, a Bija-mantra holds within itself the phenomenal potential of a dev or devi, which can be manifested with correct practice under a siddha Guru. Below we list some very potent beej aksharas and the energy that they correspond to.

The Basis of Creation - ॐ

The foremost among mantras, also called the Pranav, it encompasses within itself all the other bija aksharas. It refers to the subtlest primal Dhwani or vibration, the eternal sound of Creation.

Elements and Chakras

लं

Bija for earth, Prithvi tatva and the mooladhar chakra

वं

Bija for water, Jal tatva and the swadishthan chakra

रं

Bija for fire, Agni tatva and the manipurak chakra

यं

Bija for air, Vayu tatva and the anahad chakra

हं

Bija for ether, Akasha tatva and the visshudhi chakra

हं ठं ॐ

Bija for the agya chakra

Beej for Dev Ahvahan

हौं

Haum - In this Mantra, Ha is Shiv and Au is Sadashiv. Bhagwan Shiv is worshipped with this mantra.

दुं

Dum - Here Da means Durga. U means to protect. This is the Mantra of Durga Mata.

क्रीं

Kreem - Kalika Maa is worshipped with this mantra. Ka is Kali. Ra is Brahman. Ee is Mahamaya.

ह्रीं

Hreem - This is the Mantra of Mahamaya or Bhuvanesvari. Ha means Shiva. Ra is Prakriti. Ee means Mahamaya. Nada is the mother of the universe. Bindu means the dispeller of sorrow.

श्रीं

Shreem - This is the Mantra of Mahalakshmi. Sa is Mahalakshmi. Ra means wealth. Ee means satisfaction or contentment.

ऐं

Aim - This is the Bija-Mantra of Sarasvati. Ai means Sarasvati.

क्लीं

Kleem -This is the mantra for Mata Kali.

हूं

Hoom - In this Mantra, Ha is Shiva. U is Bhairava.

गं

Gam - This is the Shri Ganesha-Bija. Ga means Ganesha.

क्ष्रौं

Kshraum - This is the Bija of Narasimha. Ksha is Narasimha. Ra is Brahma. Au means with teeth pointing upwards.

व्यां

Vyaam - Vyaam is the Bija of Vyasa-Mantra

ब्रिं

Brim is the bija of Brihaspati-Mantra

The Bindu in all the above mantras means the dispeller of sorrow.

Please Note: The Bija-Mantras should not be chanted by those who are not well acquainted with them. Only those who have a very good knowledge of the Sanskrit language and/or who have been directly initiated by a Guru (who has Mantra-Siddhi) can take up the Japa of Bija-Mantras.
