Kaivalyapaad, Yogsutra 4.17

Patanjali now dwells on the relation or dependence of object on the chitta,

तदुपरागापेक्षित्वाच्चित्तस्य वस्तु ज्ञाताज्ञातम् ॥ ४.१७ ॥

taduparaagaapekshitvaach chittasya vastu gyaataagyaatam || 4.17 ||

tad - thereby
uparaag - colouring, casting a reflection
apekshitvaat - because of expecting/wanting
chittasya - of the chitta vastu - object
gyaat - known
agyaatam - unknown

The chitta needs to be coloured by the reflection of an object (through contact with senses) for it to comprehend the object. Therefore, depending on whether the chitta has been coloured or not, the object remains known or unknown to the chitta.
