Colours in Ancient Hindu Arts and Healing Sciences

By Priyanshi Katiyar

In Vedic culture, colours are not merely decorative elements; they are powerful expressions of cosmic energy and consciousness. Ancient Indian arts, architecture, rituals and healing sciences were deeply rooted in the understanding that each colour carries a specific vibration that influences the mind, body and soul.

Vedic texts and traditions associate colours with the Pancha Mahabhutas (five elements) and the Chakra system.

For example, red symbolises Shakti (divine energy), passion and vitality. It is widely used in temple rituals, wedding ceremonies and sacred markings like sindoor and kumkum to stimulate strength and life force.

Yellow, linked with knowledge and prosperity, represents the energy of Jupiter and is associated with turmeric, learning and spiritual wisdom. It is commonly worn during auspicious ceremonies and worship of deities like Vishnu and Brihaspati.

Blue, the colour of vastness and depth, is connected with Bhagwan Vishnu. It signifies calmness, protection and infinite consciousness. In Vedic healing practices, blue is believed to soothe the nervous system and promote inner peace.

Green, representing balance and renewal, is associated with nature, growth, and the heart chakra. It is believed to support emotional healing and harmony.

Ancient Indian art forms such as temple murals, Madhubani and miniature paintings used natural pigments derived from plants, minerals and earth elements. These pigments were chosen not only for their visual appeal but also for their subtle healing properties. The use of natural colours ensured alignment with nature and cosmic rhythms. In Ayurveda and other Vedic healing sciences, colour therapy was subtly integrated through clothing, gemstones, food and meditation practices. By consciously using colours, individuals aimed to restore doshic balance and enhance spiritual awareness.

Thus, in Vedic culture, colours serve as sacred tools—bridging art, healing and spirituality—reflecting a holistic vision where aesthetics and well-being coexist in harmony.
