Nabhi Chikitsa

By Veda Matiyani

In Ayurveda the Nabhi (navel) is a vital centre of the body as it is connected to many Nadis (etheric channels) and the Manipoorak Chakra (energy centre) is located here. Practicing therapies or massages focused on the Nabhi improves digestion, blood circulation, skin health and nervous system.

Why It Works: The "Master Switch"

In traditional medicines the navel is considered the "Peeti" or the focal point where the body's 72000 nadis converge. Since the skin at the navel is thinner and highly vascularized, applying warm oil there, allows for efficient absorption into the bloodstream and the enteric nervous system. The navel is physically close to the vagus nerve and the solar plexus. Stimulating this area with warm oil sends signals to the parasympathetic nervous system, triggering a "rest and digest" state. Also, the gut's neural network responds to the warmth and lubrication of oiling, which reduces cortisol levels and alleviates systemic anxiety.

The navel is the first point of nourishment in the womb through the umbilical cord and Ayurveda considers it the seat of the Agni (digestive fire) and linked to the energy centre governing vitality and metabolism.

According to modern perspective also, gentle massage with warm oil improves local circulation, relaxes abdominal muscles and calms the parasympathetic nervous system. It improves bowel movement and reduces bloating and acidity. People also report improvement in dry lips, cracked heels and dry skin patches, improved eyesight, reduced menstrual discomfort and better immunity by applying oil in the navel.

Different oils have different usages and provide relaxation like:

  • Desi Ghee: Extremely nourishing and replenishes tissue health
  • Castor Oil: Reduces inflammation, Menstrual pain and cramps. It is known for its vata balance and pain relief
  • Mustard Oil: Detoxifying and is helpful towards digestion and strong joint health
  • Sesame Oil: Warms the body and improves blood circulation. Sometimes also used for vata balancing
  • Coconut Oil: Provides a cooling effect and balances Pitta. It is also used for skin hydration and nourishment of the navel
  • Neem Oil: Cleanses and is great for acne-prone skin
