Harmful Effects of AirPods

By Monish Ravindra

Wireless earbuds especially AirPods, have become an essential part of modern life as they provide portability, convenience and seamless integration with smartphones and laptops. Despite their popularity, constant use of AirPods has harmful effects on human health; particularly concerning hearing damage, posture issues and psychological dependence.

AirPods, introduced by Apple in 2016, popularised the shift towards wireless audio devices. They rely on Bluetooth, a type of short-range radio communication that operates at low power. While Apple and other manufacturers comply with international safety standards, many users worry because AirPods sit deep inside the ear canal and remain there for long durations.

According to ayurveda also, excess sound disturbs vata dosha, leading to ear weakness, anxiety and nervous imbalance.

Harmful Effects of AirPods on Human Health

AirPods pose many health risks, many of which are immediate and well-documented.

Hearing Damage (The Most Significant Risk)

One of the most scientifically validated harmful effects is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

  • AirPods sit deep in the ear canal and deliver sound directly to the eardrum.
  • Many users listen at high volume to block outside noise.
  • Prolonged exposure above 85 decibels (dB) can cause permanent hearing damage. Many people unknowingly listen at 90–100 dB, especially in noisy environments.

Ear Canal Problems and Infections

AirPods can cause irritation and infections due to:

  • Long-term blockage of air circulation in the ear canal
  • Bacteria build-up on earbuds
  • Excessive wax production
  • Poor cleaning habits

Symptoms include itching, swelling, foul smelling discharge and pain while inserting or removing the earbuds. People who wear AirPods for hours daily are especially vulnerable.

Consequences of long-term loud listening

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Partial or permanent hearing loss
  • Ear pain or sensitivity
  • Difficulty distinguishing speech

These are currently the biggest proven risk associated with AirPods.

Headaches and Discomfort

Some users report:

  • Headaches
  • Pressure around the ears
  • Ear fatigue

These symptoms typically come from tight fit or constant pressure. Due to use of Noise Cancellation for long durations, sound waves cause discomfort and reduce productivity.

Psychological Dependence and Reduced Situational Awareness

AirPods have become not only a listening device but also a behavioural tool. Constant use can create dependence, anxiety and reduced attention span.

Safety Risks

Wearing AirPods in busy public places reduces awareness of surroundings, leading to road accidents, especially by missing warning sounds.

Jaw and Posture Strain

AirPods do not directly affect posture, but long-term use of any earbud can lead to jaw discomfort and pressure on the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and neck and shoulder tension. This results from constantly adjusting the earbuds in the ears or clenching the jaw to keep them in place.

Sleep Disruption

Many users wear AirPods while sleeping, which is not recommended. This sound stimulation affects deep sleep cycles and there is risk of physical damage if rolled over. Moreover, the ear canal remains blocked for hours, increasing infection risk.

Understanding Radiation and AirPods

Radiation can be classified into two major types:

1. Ionizing Radiation

  • High-energy radiation (X-rays, gamma rays).
  • Can remove electrons from atoms, damage DNA and potentially cause cancer.

2. Non-Ionizing Radiation

  • Low-energy radiation (radio waves, microwaves, visible light).
  • Cannot break chemical bonds or directly damage DNA. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi fall into this category.
  • AirPods use non-ionizing RF radiation, which is comparatively safer than ionizing radiation.

A recent study revealed that wireless AirPods emit up to 150 times more radiation than traditional wired earphones, raising concerns among health experts for daily and prolonged users. The radiation comes from Bluetooth signals continuously connecting the earbuds to devices, which can penetrate tissues near the brain and ear.

While no definitive evidence links Bluetooth radiation to cancer yet, repeated exposure is associated with cellular stress, heat generation and oxidative damage in lab studies. Heavy users, like students, professionals or call centre employees may unknowingly experience micro-level effects over years. Experts advise limiting continuous use, switching to wired alternatives when possible, and using speaker mode during long calls.

How to Use AirPods Safely

  1. Follow the 60/60 Rule: listen at 60% volume for not more than 60 minutes at a time.
  2. Take breaks and allow your ears to rest for a few minutes every hour.
  3. Keep the earbuds clean to prevent ear infections.
  4. Avoid wearing them while sleeping.
  5. Use one earbud in public to maintain awareness.
  6. Prefer over-ear headphones for long sessions as they reduce ear canal pressure and are safer for hearing.
  7. Limit use of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) as it can strain the ear with subtle pressure changes.
  8. Maintain distance from the phone. Even though Bluetooth radiation is low, it is still safer to avoid keeping devices too close to the body unnecessarily.
