Every Diwali, we light diyas to bring light into our homes, but did you know that one diya could also help you improve focus, willpower and inner calm? One powerful yet ancient tool for this is tratak.
What is Tratak?
Tratak is a Sanskrit word meaning 'to gaze' or 'to look intently'. Tratak is an ancient yogic technique mentioned in Hatha Yoga Pradipika and other scriptures, where one fixes their gaze steadily on a single point; often a flame from a cow ghee diya. It's done without blinking, until the eyes water. Agni or fire is a purifying element. The flame purifies the eyes and mind, calms restlessness and enhances focus, memory and willpower. At a time when we struggle to watch even a 15-second reel without distraction; the steady, soothing flame of a diya can help quiet the mind and bring us back to the present moment.
Tratak finds mention in many ancient scriptures:
- Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Verse 2.31): "Gazing steadily without blinking at a small object brings stability of mind."
- Gheranda Samhita describes tratak as a shatkarm (purification) that removes all eye diseases and creates inner vision.
Bahiranga (external) tratak is gazing at an external object like diya flame or any other object whereas antaranga (internal) tratak is visualising the flame or image in the mind's eye with eyes closed.
How to Practice Tratak:
1. Choose a focus object Pick a diya or candle flame and place it at eye level. Practice in a quiet, well-ventilated space.
2. Find a comfortable posture Sit cross-legged or in any comfortable meditative posture with your spine straight, neck and head aligned.
3. Gaze at the object Focus your eyes steadily on the flame without blinking as long as possible.
4. Stay present Notice any thoughts or distractions without judgment. Stay present with the flame.
5. Close your eyes If tears form or your eyes burn, close them and focus on the after-image on your eyelids.
6. Repeat the practice
Tratak is a valuable practice for those seeking focus and greater concentration. When done regularly, it can also prevent fatigue and headaches, while strengthening the eye muscles. It also aids in the management of ocular conditions such as myopia and glaucoma, as found in many studies. Beyond its physical advantages, tratak enhances presence of mind and sharpens intellect, making it an especially effective technique for students, professionals and anyone looking to boost mental clarity and performance.
The beauty of tratak lies in its simplicity. One small flame can help us regain control of our scattered attention and cultivate calm. Practiced regularly, it can become your personal reset button, allowing you to step away from the constant noise of the digital world and reconnect with yourself.
So, the next time you light a diya, don't just see it as a tradition. See it as an opportunity to look inward, recharge, and realign with your true potential.
