Shri Ram, revered as the embodiment of virtue, courage and righteousness, is one of the most enduring figures of Vedic civilisation. His legacy is not confined to the Indian subcontinent. It has travelled far and wide, leaving its mark on geography, culture, literature and traditions around the world.

Place Names with "Ram" Across the World

The presence of Shri Ram's name globally is a testament to his far-reaching influence:

India - Rambagh in Jaipur: A historic area famous for Rambagh Palace, a former royal residence; now a luxury hotel. - Ramnagar in Uttarakhand and Varanasi, historic towns with forts or palaces. - Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, a sacred pilgrimage town in Pamban Island, famous for the Ramanathaswamy Temple. - Ramganga River in Uttarakhand, Ramdhura Hills; and there are thousands of Shri Ram temples from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

Nepal Janakpur (Sitaji's birthplace) has Shri Ram Mandirs and festivals dedicated to him. Many towns and localities are named Ramnagar and Ramghat.

Sri Lanka Has many places linked to Ramayana from Rameshwaram (India) to Talaimannar belt. Sita Eliya and Munneswaram Temple have Shri Ram associations.

Thailand Known as Phra Ram in the Thai epic Ramakien, his story is honoured in literature, dance dramas and temple murals, including Bangkok's Grand Palace. There are places like Phra Ram Road in Bangkok. Thailand's old capital Ayutthaya derives from Ayodhya, Shri Ram's birthplace and the Chakri Dynasty titles its monarchs Rama I-X.

Indonesia "Rama" in Prambanan Temple inscriptions, Ramayana Ballet, streets like Jalan Rama in Java & Bali. Also, Rammang Village, South Sulawesi, a site of cultural significance.

Cambodia Angkor temples have inscriptions and murals calling him Rama.

Myanmar Known as Yama Zatdaw, the Ramayana is performed in traditional theatre.

China Ancient Buddhist texts transliterated "Rama" into Chinese characters (e.g., in Jataka stories).

Mongolia Ramayana-inspired "King Ram" tales in folk tradition.

Japan Okinawan dance-drama "Rama-tari" influenced by the epic.

Middle East In Hebrew, "Ram" appears as a personal name in the Bible (e.g., ancestor of King David, in Book of Ruth). Ancient Persian literature mentions "Ram" as a noble figure in Zoroastrian texts.

Europe Spain and Portugal have places like "Ramal" and "Ramada". England & Scotland have "Ramsey" (Ram's Island) as a place name. Norway has "Ramsoey" (Ram's Island) in old Norse. Greece has "Rama" village in Epirus. Jerusalem has Ramah, a sacred area. Germany has Ramstein in Bavaria and Ramsloh in Lower Saxony.

Africa Ethiopia: "Rama" is a town near the Eritrean border. South Africa: "Ramat" and "Ramaphosa" (prefix "Rama" in tribal languages often means 'to make happy' - coincidentally close to Sanskrit meaning).

USA & Canada Towns named Rama in Ontario (Canada) and Colorado (USA). Also have Ram Mountains in the Rockies.

South America "Rama" people in Nicaragua; also, Rama Cay Island.

Caribbean In Trinidad, Guyana, Suriname - temples and towns have "Ram" from the Indian diaspora.

Fiji, Mauritius Many settlements, schools, and temples bear the name "Ram" due to Indo-Fijian heritage. Here Indian diaspora communities celebrate Ram Leela with great fervour, preserving the cultural heritage.

Trinidad, Guyana & Suriname They hold elaborate Ramayana recitals, often blending Bhojpuri traditions with local music.

Australia Ram Island (South Australia) and Ramshead Mountain (New South Wales). Also, many streets and temples named "Ram" in areas with Indian diaspora.

Hungary Ram in Zala County.
