The Creation is a combination of lower and higher thoughts, selfish and selfless thoughts, those to collect for self and those to help others. Acting on higher thoughts takes you towards reality, towards truth. Immersing in lower thoughts, keeps you entangled and takes you towards darkness, or lower births.
Take a look at the night sky, where does your gaze drift towards? It is the moon--because it is the brightest. The brahmand is filled with various energies, devs and devis, some are in darkness and some are in light. Those which are in light, you can see them--the stars, the moon, the sun. The ones in darkness you cannot see. In deep states of dhyan, one can interact with these energies and experience their pain, that is how they got the chance and they let it go. Because the human body is the only chance where you can move from darkness to light, tamso maa jyotir gamaya.
To appreciate this, you can try this experiment. Go inside in a lightless, soundless room and sit inside a cupboard. Ask someone to lock the cupboard and instruct them not to open before 12 hours, even if you shout or scream. Also tell them to come and remind you why they are not opening the door, even though you can barely breathe or see your own hands. Let them ask you after every hour why should they open the door for you? What have you done to remove the darkness in creation?
Just like you would be crying for help from that dark cupboard, these entities in darkness reach out for help in states of dhyan. When you do spiritual practices and acts of charity, you develop a glow and it is this glow that they can see (just like you can see the moon and stars) and they reach out to you. The brighter your glow, the more devs and devis look at you, and the more you evolve because if someone is in pain, if nothing, at least you will project a thought to save them. And energy follows thought. When gods see you and ask you to do something for them, your thoughts manifest for them. Similarly their thoughts manifest for you. You are chosen by them and they ask for your evolution and glow.
This is the underlying principle. Your glow increases when you help others. Gita says living for self alone is a life of sin. Do something for someone else. Just like you see the gods as light, they too will see you as light. From where they are, they cannot see your pretty face or riches, all they can see is the glow. You cannot see their dimensions, they cannot see yours. Only light.
During surya saiyam, you see the sun and feel gratitude towards it. This makes the sun evolve. Similarly, when gods see your light, they feel gratitude towards you and that makes you rise.
Do swadhyay on what your desire is and what are you prepared to leave for that. If you do not leave, the weight on you will keep increasing and your capacity to carry that weight will progressively decline, making you sink further. If you shed off that weight, then you can stay afloat. The job of the Guru is to help you get out of the ocean, to let go of the weight that is making you sink into darkness. To take you towards light.
