Procedure

1. Cleansing

Wake up at least 30 minutes before sunrise. After using the restroom, pour three tumblers of pure water on your head while chanting the Gayatri Mantra. This helps cleanse the impressions and thoughts of the previous day. The third tumbler is to be poured gently on the head—do not dry this water, let it absorb naturally.

2. Pranayam

2. Pranayam

Sit or stand facing in the direction from where sun rises. Seek blessings of the Guru and Shri Ganesh. Perform the Suryabhedi Pranayam.

3. Invocation

As the sun rises, stop the pranayam. Fix your gaze at the Sun. Become aware of the Rishi (to who the mantra was first revealed), Chhand (meter) and Ishta Dev (presiding deity). Invoke the energies of Mata Gayatri and Mata Savitri.

4. Merger with the Sun

4. Merger with the Sun

Begin chanting the Shri Gayatri Mantra out loud maintaining awareness of the form, energy and name of Surya. As the color of Sun changes from light pinkish to orange, offer arag (water). Close your eyes, continue chanting the mantra internally now and merge with Sun.

5. Completion and Integration

Once the practice feels complete, taking permission from the Guru, slowly withdraw your awareness, do the Shanti Path. When you open your eyes look first at the center of the palms, then your body and then any where else. It is advisable to wash your eyes after the practice. The practice of Surya Sadhna must be undertaken only in the presence and guidance of Guru, with proper drishti and dhwani.

Benefits

Benefits

Sun is the giver of life, the illuminator, elevator of consciousness, one who enlightens, empowers and enlivens all beings, bestower of fortune, siddhis, gyana. While modern science had to wait for discovery of serotonin, its dependence on daylight and its role in wellbeing, satiety and longevity to acknowledge that there is no substitute for natural light, the vedic masters taught us the science of saiyam eons ago to enhance health, beauty, vigor and emotional stability. The practice of Surya Saiyam brings about such benefits, especially the production of the anti-ageing hormone serotonin, only as by-products of the practice. The boons which Surya Saiyam grants are incomprehensible.

Any kind of spiritual practice requires a lot of force to break through the ties of physical realm and access higher dimensions. Karma is the fuel the propels you to break the force of gravity.

Surya is a highly volatile energy, it is pure fire. If the body is weak, contaminated or in a state of disturbance, it can have a reaction. Therefore it is advised to practice and perfect cleansing and balancing kriyas like Sanatan Kriya before attempting this sadhna.

Shuddh Uccharan (Proper pronunciation)

Shuddh Uccharan (Proper pronunciation)

The efficacy of Mantra depends on the correctness of the chant. Faulty pronunciation of even a single alphabet changes the entire meaning.

Role Of Guru

Role Of Guru

No sadhana begins without a Guru. He is not merely a guide, but the very shakti behind the mantra. Words without His dhvani are just sound; rituals without His drishti are mere form.

A mantra received through books or recordings carries no power unless passed through the Guru’s vibrational transmission. Only a siddha Guru can plant that living seed.

Even the most potent sadhanas can mislead without His grace. The Guru aligns, shields, and awakens. His gaze lights the Surya within, and His voice turns mantra into shakti. Without Him, the path remains in darkness.

This verse identifies Om as the vibration of the Sun, known as udgitha in Vedic chant. A few years ago, a western university recorded the sound of Sun and they revealed a deep, resonating hum—strikingly similar to the Sound of Om
