Patanjali distinguishes the chitta from the object, वस्तुसाम्ये चित्तभेदात्तयोर्विभक्तः पन्थाः ॥ ४.१५ ॥ vastusaamye chittabhedaattayorvibhaktaḥ vastu – object saamye – being same or similar chitta – chitta or mind bhedaat – different forms tayoh – of them both (chitta and vastu) vibhaktah – different / varied panthaah – paths.
Even though the object is in union as a whole, the difference is apparent in how it is perceived by the chitta. Therefore, the paths of the chitta and the object perceived by it are different.
