One of the five ‘yamas’ in the Ashtanga yoga translates as charity. Selfless service and charity is termed as one of the most effective purification techniques in the ancient Vedic texts, that makes one eligible for higher practices.
Charity is usually seen as giving something to the needy. While doing so, it is important however to keep in mind that it is not ‘you’ who is giving, as you are just a channel. Hence, the simplest way to define charity is to do something for someone without expecting anything in return for it.
Dhyan Foundation runs a number of service initiatives as we feel it is our responsibility to create avenues for you to come forth and participate in a noble cause, in any/all means possible. Further, Dhyan Foundation is totally voluntary in nature and all its activities are run by regular people like you and me, who volunteer to work for a cause in their own personal capacity and degree.
Talking of degree, the obvious question arises - does charity need always be in monetary terms? No, Charity need not be with money. Charity can be kind words, helping someone, teaching, blessing someone, it can even be something as simple as a smile if someone needs that, at that moment, without expecting anything in return. It is any act of helping someone without any direct benefit to you. Your work is only to do your karma and forget about it.
